Roundabout pedestrian crossings
Consultation has concluded
Update to roundabout pedestrian crossings
- Lines painted on the road surface will replace the raised cushions on all approaches
- This will provide a smoother path for pedestrians with mobility aids or prams
- Raised cushions will be re-installed on the road about two meters from the walkways
- This means the originally intention of calming vehicle traffic will be maintained.
What we heard
Council received various feedback from pedestrians and motorists regarding the changes to the roundabout at the Firebrace and McLachlan Streets intersection.
Most of this feedback has been critical of the current installation. Specifically, the humps in the wombat crossings are challenging for people pushing prams or using mobility scooters.
We've listened and we're making some changes
Council is committed to improving pedestrian safety and maintaining pedestrian priority at this intersection.
Therefore, it proposes to modify the current setup.
The new plan involves removing the raised humps that form the “wombat” crossings on each leg of the roundabout and replacing them with road level zebra crossings.
The updated crossings will still prioritise pedestrians.
To ensure safety, speed cushions will be installed before the zebra crossings to slow down approaching cars.
These cushions will only be on the approaches to the roundabout, but cars will still need to give way to pedestrians on the crossings when exiting the roundabout.
The changes are scheduled to take place within the next two to three weeks.
